The Department of Archaeology commenced its duties 1890. However, the ground-work related to archaeological activities took place many years before, during the governance of Sir Hercules Robinson. In 1868, seven years after the initiation of a archaeological survey in India, the Ceylon Government (now Sri Lanka), appointed a Committee to obtain information regarding the ancient architectural works of Ceylon. The combating Coastal Erosion dates back to many centuries, and Coast Protection works were handled by various departments at various times prior to 1963. The realization of the government, that a comprehensive approach to coastal erosion control is required, led to establishment of a Coast Protection Engineering Unit in the Colombo Port Commission in 1963. In 1978, the Coast Protection Engineering Unit was transferred to Ministry of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (MFAR) and was functioned as Coast Conservation Division.
The Department of Labour was started under the Indian Immigrant Labour Ordinance No. 01 of 1923, with the objective of providing welfare for migrant Indian estate Labourers. The fundamental function of the Department of Labour is to implement the legislations. This was introduced in order to put into operation the provision under section 51 of the Companies Act, while came it’s operation in the year of 1938..

Probation System was tried out by the judiciary of Sri Lanka in the 1930s. Probation of Offenders Ordinance passed in England in 1907 had an impact on the judiciary of Sri Lanka as well. Probation Ordinance No. 42 passed in 1944 was a result of the aforesaid impact. Probation system was established in Sri Lankan Judiciary through this Act.
